Dr. Ali Ouf، head of the General Department of Drugs in Chamber of Commerce said that the Egyptian Drug Fund project was invented since 2012، but was not implemented until now.
Egypt has suffered a severe shortage in imported drugs for months. However، the crisis worsened after the central bank of Egypt had floated the local currency to make its value decline by 50% against the US Dollar.
The shortage has hit vital drugs such as insulin and some other diabetes medications as well as drugs for heart diseases، cancer and renal failure.
Egypt’s Ministry of Health accused drug distributors of "attempting to press” it to move up the drug prices imposed by the government.
In December، Mr. Ismail said that the cabinet had discussed the drug crisis and would announce the results in full transparency، adding “the interests of citizens are the first criteria to make any decisions”.
