Spokesman for Red Sea Ports Authority Malak Youssef announced Friday that the Port of Safaga received ‘Magellan’ cruise ship، carrying 870 tourists of different nationalities on board، to visit Luxor and Aswan’s tourist attractions and archaeological sites.
Youssef explained that that the authority has facilitated the arrival procedures of the cruise ship and completed all inspection procedures، in order to welcome the tourists to Safaga.
In October 2015، European countries and the US imposed a flights ban to Sinai، after a Russian civilian plane crashed in Sinai، killing all passengers and the flight crew members on board.
Tourism officials expect an increase in the number of tourists visiting Egypt in the coming period، as European countries start to lift the flights ban to Sinai.
The total number of tourists who visited Egypt reached 640179 tourists in February 2016، according to Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
Meanwhile، Safaga port is located in the Red Sea Governorate on the western coast of the Red Sea.
It is a broad bay (natural gulf) on a distance of 60 km. South of Hurgada and on a distance of 225 nm. South of Suez port. This broad bay is naturally protected from the east and the north sides by Safaga Island، and protected from the prevailing western winds by mountains. Yet، for a brief interval، it is affected by south winds (El-Azeeb) which causes disturbances and waves inside the port. The port drafts are deep، thus enabling the accommodation of large vessels، according to Maritime Transport Sector (MTS).
