Traffic congestion prevailed Monday on major highways، main roads and squares of Cairo، amid an intensified presence of traffic policemen to prevent any traffic jam and accident as well.
The annual costs of the congestion in Cairo is estimated to be up to EGP50 billion، noting that at least 1،000 people die each year in traffic related aaccidents، of whom more than half are pedestrians and over 4،000 injuries، according to a recent World Bank report on Cairo traffic congestion.
These rates are far higher than those recorded in most other major cities of the world. Egypt loses about 12،000 lives due to road traffic crashes every year. It has a road traffic fatality rate of 42 deaths per 100،000 population. The majority (48%) of those killed are passengers of four-wheelers though pedestrians also constitute a significant proportion (20%) of these fatalities، according to the World Health organization.
