The UAE’s travel and tourism sector will create over 18،000 new jobs this year، according to a report، Arabian Business Website reported.
The World Travel and Tourism Council، in its 2017 report، said direct employment in the travel and tourism sector is set to rise by 7،302، an increase of 2.3 percent، from 317،500 jobs in 2016.
The number is expected to increase by 2.4 percent per annum to reach 410،000 jobs in 2027، the report added.
Indirect jobs will rise by 1.8 percent، or 11،100، to 628،500 jobs this year compared to 617،500 jobs last year. The report predicts a 2.0 percent per annum (pa) increase in employment opportunities، reaching 770،000 jobs by 2027.
Meanwhile، the contribution of sector to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) will grow by 2.9 percent to reach $44.6bn (AED163.8bn) this year from $43.3bn (AED159.1bn) in 2016.
The total contribution is forecast to rise by 4.9 percent pa to $72.0bn (AED264.5bn)، 12.4 percent of GDP، in 2027.
The sector’s direct contribution to GDP stood at $18.7bn (AED68.5bn)، 5.2 percent of total GDP in 2016. It is forecast to increase by 3.2 percent in 2017 and by 5.1 percent pa، from 2017-2027، to $31.6bn (AED116.1bn)، 5.4 percent of total GDP in 2027.
The Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) reported 4.57 million travellers visited the emirate in the first quarter of 2017، an 11 percent increase، compared to the same period last year.
In the run up to the Expo 2020 event، the emirate is expected to add 40،000 new hotel rooms after it achieved the 100،000 room milestone in October last year.
