FIFA lift suspension on Sudan

Friday 14/July/2017 - 09:44 PM

FIFA lifted on Thursday a suspension on the Sudan Football Association (SFA) after the Sudanese government dropped the decision that prompted the ban، according to reports.

The international governing body of football had suspended Sudan from world football earlier this month over government intervention.

The SFA were banned after the ministry of justice issued a decree ordering the removal of SFA chairman Mutasim Gaafar as FIFA rules outlaw governmental interference in the running of any of its member associations.

The ban was lifted after Sudanese Prime Minister Bakri Hassan Salih issued a resolution on July 7 declaring the previous decree، which gave the police the right to evacuate the SFA premises and hand it over to another group led by self-proclaimed SFA president Abdel-Rahman Sir Elkatim، void. FIFA-recognised president Gaafar and his board have also been reinstated.

“Under the circumstances، the Bureau of the Council decided on 13 July 2017 to lift the suspension of the SFA with immediate effect،” FIFA statement read.

The decision، however، came too late as Sudanese giants Al Hilal and Al Merreikh have already been knocked out of the CAF Champions League after they forfeited their games 3-0. Sudan’s Al Hilal Obeid have also been disqualified from the CAF Confederation Cup.

On the other hand، the Sudanese national team will now be able to face Burundi in the African Nations Championship qualifications on July 15.
