A Jordanian soldier who opened fire outside a military base in southern Jordan last November، killing 3 US military trainers، was convicted by a military court Monday.
The soldier fired as a car carrying the Americans attempted to enter the al-Jafr base near the southern Jordanian town of Mann.
The defendant، 1st Sgt. Marik al-Tuwayha، plead not guilty and claimed to have fired at the vehicle because he feared the base was under attack.
Al-Tuwayha said as he left the courtroom: “I have all the respect for the king، but I was doing my job.”
The trial was attended by the families of two of the murdered soldiers.
The US embassy in Jordan issued a statement following the guilty verdict in which is said that the trial "confirmed that the deceased U.S. service members followed all established procedures when accessing the base the day of the incident، as we have noted before.”
“We are reassured to see the perpetrator brought to justice،” the embassy added.
Al-Tuwayha was sentenced to life in prison. His defense attorney said he would appeal the sentence.
