They're monstrous predators famous for grabbing prey out of the water and swallowing them whole، daily mail reported.

And a huge 4.5-metre crocodile showed why his kind is so feared in its natural habitat as it gave a hardened handler a big fright.

Otis، a 500kg maneater، was filmed spectacularly leaping out of the water and snapping his massive jaws at a boat in a Darwin wildlife park.

Crocodile expert Matt Wright posted the terrifying footage to his Facebook page، saying the massive predator was just coming up for curious look.

The reptile first swam innocently enough towards the boat before suddenly rearing up and launching itself forward with its mouth wide open.

His jaws snapped just inches from Mr Wright's face، giving him such a shock he cried out 'oh s**t' before asking Otis 'you hungry mate?' and remarking it was best to leave him alone.

Otis was more animated than a larger 800kg croc the Outback Wrangler pictured on his social media on Monday with its mouth taped shut with duct tape.

The animal lover is no stranger to massive reptiles، having caught a one tonne behemoth in the past، and a 5.58 metre monster in 2009.

He is also a crocodile egg collector and chopper pilot، and has a passion for wildlife preservation، earning his nickname from a National Geographic series of the same name.

Suspected crocodile attacks have claimed the lives of at least two people in Australia this year alone.

A 47-year-old man was killed wading across a flooded causeway near Kakadu National Park in January.

The death of a spearfisherman in March has also been blamed on a four-metre crocodile.

In May a 54-year-old was hospitalised after being attacked while crossing a waterway south-west of Darwin، suffering bites to his chest and arm.
