Every time a disaster happens in the railways، the voices raise calling for the privatization of this facility.. I am against this idea for many reasons، the first and most important one is that this facility is a mean of transportation for the poor and low-income people who depend on it in all their movements، especially in Upper Egypt and remote areas.. the deterioration that occurred in this vital and important facility is not a justification for its privatization.
What happened on Friday is a disaster in all criteria، as the accident claims the lives of about 40 citizens and left 132 injured.. the Initial investigations revealed that the railway signals are not the cause of the collision and the reason of this collision is the drivers of Port Said - Alexandria train No. 571 and Cairo-Alexandria train No. 13، The driver of train number 13 exceeded the "red" semaphore signal، which means that he must have stopped immediately but he neglected the signal، meanwhile، The driver of Train No. 571 also bears responsibility because he was awaiting in a wrong place (not prepared to stop in and the driver of Train No. 571 was arrested). We do not know whether the driver of train No. 13 had escaped or died. A transport committee was formed to check the black boxes of the trains.
the drivers may have committed mistakes، but this does not mean putting forward the idea of privatizing the railways، but it opens the field of training the drivers and following up their discipline and those who follow up them and follow up the entire railway system.. There is a serious mistake in all fields of the railway system، there is negligence in the maintenance and the crossroads. And the video shared last week on the social media networks features 4 drivers while taking drugs، was an indication of the seriousness of negligence.
The railway system needs attention and follow-up، punishment and reward as well، and If we need funds for the development، as what is happening in the whole world، we should pay attention for the "Cargo" trains to transport goods through railways، hence، we can spend money on the development and on the other hand، this will help in easing the traffic congestion and reduce the heavy transport and trailers that cause daily disasters on highways.
But we shouldn't think of the privatization or raising the ticket prices. As the Train passengers are from the low-income class and need subsidies.

Yesterday، Some attacked the idea of forming a higher council headed by the president to develop the railway system.. They said we should not put everything on the shoulder of the President، But this vital facility، which is considered one of the oldest facilities in the world.. is one of the most important factors that control the movement of transportation، low-income people and goods. I agree with those who call for forming a higher council aims at reaching a solution like what has been done by Mamish in the Suez Canal project. We need for a responsible person to manage this sector. There must be three departments in the railway system to avoid frequent accidents.
