A giant 18ft shark has been spotted lurking off the North East coast - thought to be the biggest ever seen of Britain's coast، mirror reported.
The massive fish was spotted off the coast of Tynemouth، near Newcastle، and was captured on camera by a local fisherman.
Tony Marron was heading back to shore when he came across the huge basking shark، thinking it was initially two dolphins.
Tony، from North Shields، said: “We drew in as close as we could and realised it was not two dolphins، it was actually one fish.
“It was a basking shark. Estimating the length from its tail to its dorsal fin، it looks about 16-18 feet.
“That’s a good size but they get bigger than that.”
Reaching lengths of up to 12m، basking sharks are the largest fish in British waters and the second largest in the world after the whale shark، Chronicle Live reports. The gentle giants feed on plankton and are usually seen off the west coast of the UK.
Typically deep water swimmers، Tony said he was surprised to see how close the shark was to the shore.
“They are a pretty rare sight. We were surprised it was so close to the Tyne.
“I caught the mouth of the Tyne in the background of the video so you can see how close it is.”
He added that they managed to get within five feet of the huge fish، which did not seem fazed by the fishing boat.
It’s been a busy week for marine life on the North East coast.
Dolphins were captured on camera off the Northumberland coast near Cambois and a baby seal kept families fascinated as it sunbathed on the beach in South Shields.
And another shark was spied at Hessle Foreshore، east Yorkshire، with dad Dave Mantle and three-year-old daughter Angel-Lee clocking the the animal's fin as it breached in the shadow of the Humber Bridge.
Mr Mantle، 37، of Hessle، said: “We were just enjoying the treat when we saw something moving in the water. I then got my phone out.
“Typically، I didn’t see it for a good while but then it came up again. My daughter was really enthusiastic and she was shouting ‘Shark! Shark!’"
