A prodigy in his days: The story Jurji Habib Zaidan

Al-Hilal Magazine، the monthly Egyptian cultural and literature magazine، is currently celebrating its iconic 1495th issue، marking the 125th anniversary since it was founded by Jurji Habib Zaidan.

The Editor-in-Chief Khaled Nageh، wrote in this historical issue، some glimpses of the founder’s story، and how the magazine was a source of enlightenment and culture throughout the last century.

"We are getting our wisdom and knowledge from ancestors’ stories، especially if the story drama was much like the drama of our daily lives، let alone the story of our young man، the prodigy of his day، Jurji Habib Zaidan، who was born to a poor family، supporting his father by working in a restaurant frequented by writers and intellectuals such as Ibrahim Yazigi، Abdullah Bustani and Jacob Sarouf، awakened his eagerness for knowledge.”

The cover of the 1495th issue، was designed by the artist Mohammed Abu Talib، the cover shows the picture of Jurji Zidane with the slogan "125 years of Enlightenment" and a list of the most prominent writers of the magazine، including Ahmed Orabi، Jamal al-Din al-Afghani، Abdul Rahman al-Rafi، Sheikh Mohammed Abdo، Zaki Mubarak، Mohamed Hussein Hikal، Jabran Khalil Gibran، Bishara Khoury، Bertrand Russell، Abu Al-Qasim Al-Shabi، Abbas Al-Akkad، Taha Hussein، Khalil Mataran، Tawfiq Al-Hakim، Salama Musa، Mikhail Naima and Maarouf Al-Rusafi.

The issue also contains President Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi’s article، in which he addresses the importance of intellectuals in the society، in addition to their key role to increase awareness in such critical time of Egyptian history.

Al-Hilal was founded in 1892 by Jurji Zaidan، a journalist from Beirut who had come to Egypt in the 1880s.The first issue of the monthly was published in September 1892. After Jurji Zaidan's death the journal was edited by his sons، Emile and Shukri Zaydan.

The magazine، published in Arabic، is based in Cairo. It is one of the state-owned publications in the country.State-run Dar Al Hilal Publishing House is the publisher of the magazine.

On 30 March 2011 Helmy Al Namnam، the current Culture Minister، became the editor-in-chief of Al Hilal. The next editor-in-chief of the magazine is Mohamed Al Shafei.

Past issues of Al-Hilal were digitialized by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. In addition، the publisher also archived the past issues of the magazine and of other publications. South Korean news agency the AsiaN and the magazine initiated a cultural partnership to support the cooperation in the fields of culture and media.
