Cairo criminal court has adjourned on Tuesday the retrial of a defendant named Bastawy Gharieb who is accused in the case of murdering late General Prosecutor Hisham Barakat to September 26.
Earlier، the court sentenced Bastawy Gharieb to 15 years in jail in absentia over murdering late General Prosecutor Hisham Barakat.
Barakat was killed in a June 29، 2015 car bombing near his home in Heliopolis. The incident marked the first assassination of a General prosecutor aftermath the ousting of former President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
He was the most senior state official to be killed by militants in recent years.
He had died after undergoing critical surgery، BBC news reported. A medical official at the hospital told the Associated Press that Mr Barakat had received multiple shrapnel wounds to the shoulder، chest and liver.
The explosion sent black smoke rising over the neighbourhood and set fire to nearby trees. Images from the scene showed several damaged vehicles and bloodstains on the streets.
Witnesses said that the blast had been strong enough to shatter the windows of nearby homes.
Egypt blamed the Brotherhood and Gaza-based Hamas militants for Mr Barakat's killing، although both groups have denied they were involved.
