Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has taken to facebook on Thursday to congratulate the Egyptians and the Islamic Nation on New Hijri year 1439 occasion.
“A new Hijri year is upon us.. On this occasion، I send to the Egyptian people and the Islamic nation my sincere congratulations، and wishing welfare and stability to our country. Many happy returns” The President’s official facebook page captioned.
Noteworthy، the Islamic New Year، also known as Arabic New Year or Hijri New Year is the day that marks the beginning of a new Islamic calendar year، and is the day on which the year count is incremented.
The first day of the year is observed on the first day of Muharram، the first month in the Islamic calendar.
The first Islamic year begins in 622 AD with the emigration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina، known as the Hijra.
All religious duties، such as prayer، fasting in the month of Ramadan، and pilgrimage، and the dates of significant events، such as celebration of holy nights and festivals، are calculated according to the lunar calendar.
Before the advent of the Prophet Muhammad، who founded Islam، the start of the New Year marked a month of non-violence in the Arab world، where tribesmen would lay down their weapons، according to the week.
-How is it celebrated?-
"It's a low-key event in the Muslim world، celebrated less than the two major festivals of Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha،" says the BBC.
These festivals، which mark the end of hajj and Ramadan، are viewed as the most significant events in the Islamic calendar.
Traditions and customs for Muharram vary for Shia and Sunni Muslims، but the date is a public holiday in most Islamic countries، including the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia.
The majority will celebrate the holiday by attending prayer sessions in their mosque and spending time with family. The main emphasis is on reflection، remembrance and gratitude، say religious scholars.
