Cairo Criminal court headed by Chancellor، Salah Mahgoub، has sentenced on Sunday 5 defendants to seven years in prison with hard labor، and two other defendants to life in prison.
Moreover، the court sentenced 3 defendants to 10 years، and 3 others to three years، and 1 other to two years، while acquitted two others.
In this case، 16 defendants stand accused of rioting in the incidents which saw the deaths of 22 football fans of Zamalek SC.
The incidents took place before the match as fans were attempting to enter the Air Defence Stadium، before the Zamalek SC and ENPPI premier league football match. The deaths occurred as security forces violently dispersed crowding fans at the entrance to the stadium.
Police claim the victims died due to a stampede، while UWK members dispute the police account، saying they were teargassed as they scrambled to enter the stadium ahead of the game، and only able to get through a "tiny metal fence surrounded by barbed wire."
Eyewitnesses at the scene said the police didn't initially use water cannon to disperse the crowd، which is standard procedure according to the protest law، and instead used teargas.
