Toyota has revealed the Tj Cruiser, part van, part SUV, possibly the world’s first purpose built SUVan? Who knows, but what we do know is it will be debuting as a concept at Tokyo Motor Show later this month, alongside the new Century luxury saloon and GR HV Sports concept. AutoExpress said

The angular design, as seen in the images, suggests from the get-go that this is a practical vehicle. The concept has a bonnet, roof and wheel arches which have been designed to resist scratches, dirt and accidental impacts from objects – similar in principle to the padding on the Citroen C4 Cactus.

Inside, there are funky folding seats which can make a smooth, flat loading area that’s designed to be useful for anyone from families to tradespeople. The 3m long bed also features multiple anchoring points to secure cargo and an area under one of the passenger seats to store smaller items of shopping.

There is a large tailgate which adds practicality and could provide much needed shelter for users who take the Tj on rainy rural excursions, such as dog walking. The Tj also has rear sliding doors to make it easier to load cargo and people into the back, this also reduces the chance of accidentally denting other cars when people exit. However, while the SUVan appears to offer great space and practicality, the concept does have one glaring flaw – there are only four seats.

Toyota has also said that the model shown at Tokyo will have a 2.0-litre hybrid engine and be built on a platform that supports both two- and four-wheel drive.
