Egyptian President Abdul Fattah Al Sisi held intensive communication with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during the past two days، over the ongoing UNESCO vote for the Director Genera post to replaced Irina Bokova، whose tenure expires at the end of the year.
The contacts reflected the deep—rooted ties and close coordination to achieve the common interest of the two countries with regard to the UNESCO vote.
Egypt has expressed thanks to the China over the withdrawal of its candidate Qian Tang in favor of Egypt’s candidate Ambassador Moushira Khattab.
Egypt said that the withdrawal decision reflects the strength and depth of the strategic partnership relations between Egypt and China، and which have always been distinguished by mutual respect، understanding، and a high level of coordination in various forums and international organizations.
Ahead of the fourth round of UNSESCO vote، China announced the withdrawal of its candidate Qian Tang in favor of Egypt’s candidate Ambassador Moushira Khattab.
Khattab had 13 votes in its tally; with the Chinese candidate’s withdrawal، she has the chance to garner at least 18 votes in the upcoming fourth round.
During three rounds، no candidate has acquired the 30 necessary votes of 58-member Executive Board to replaced Irina Bokova، whose tenure expires at the end of the year.
The vote would continue to a four round tonight، if the 30-vote quota was not met، the election will be continued to a decisive fifth round، be held on Friday، including the top two candidate from the fourth round.
France and Qatar's candidates shared first place with 18، Khattab of Egypt finished third with 13 votes، leaving Qian Tang of China، who was in the fourth place before withdrawal with 5 votes and Lebanon’s Vera El Khoury came in the rock bottom with 4 votes.
