President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi spent about 30 hours in an official visit to Cyprus. During the visit، President Al-Sisi attended a number of meetings and tripartite summits، in addition to the signing of many agreements. The visit also resulted in achieving many practical results in many security، military، economic، political and popular files.
According to an analytical report prepared by the State Information Service (SIS) on the outcomes of this visit، President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi headed to Cyprus on Monday 20 November 2017 in a two-day official visit، which included holding bilateral and tripartite summits and discussions، in addition to the participation in the fifth session of of the tripartite summit between Egypt، Cyprus and Greece.
During the visit، President Al-Sisi and Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiadis inaugurated the Egyptian-Cypriot Business Forum، which aims to activate economic and trade relations between the two countries and enhance the investment opportunities in both countries. On the second day of his visit to Cyprus، President Al-Sisi met with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras
On the other hand، Al-Sisi participated in the fifth trilateral summit between Egypt، Cyprus and Greece، which was followed by a press conference.
The SIS carried out an analytical report about the outcomes of Al-Sisi’s visit to Cyprus:
1- Strengthening security and military cooperation
The strategic position of the three countries of Egypt، Greece and Cyprus highlighted the importance of the security and military file between the three countries as key players in maintaining security and stability of the Mediterranean and Middle East regions.
During the visit، a memorandum of joint security cooperation was signed. A number of meetings were also held to consolidate the relations between the two countries. The president said that he "exchanged views with his Cypriot counterpart on a number of regional and international issues of common interest.
Al-Sisi praised the developments in the military cooperation relations between Egypt and Cyprus، including the signing of the first military cooperation agreement between the two countries in November 2015، followed by a series of mutual visits of defense ministers and military leaders.
"I would like to take this opportunity to express our deep appreciation to the Cypriot people for their support for Egypt in its war against terrorism، which aims at destabilizing the security of the Egyptian people، Al-Sisi said. Al-Sisi also announced Egypt’s commitment to cooperate with the Cypriot Government to provide security not only to the two peoples but also to all the Mediterranean Region’s people who support their national institutions in their fight against sinful terrorism.
In this regard، President Al-Sisi stressed that "countering terrorism، which constitutes one of the most important threats to the world، can only be achieved through the concerted efforts of the international community.
The Economic outcomes of Al-Sisi’s visit to Cyprus:
During the visit، President Al-Sisi paid a special attention to the mutual cooperation between the two countries. Al-Sisi said" It is the appropriate time for the two peoples to reap the benefits of these relations by strengthening cooperation between the two sides in various fields and opening up new horizons for investment opportunities in both countries،".
The two-day visit witnessed the signing of a number of cooperation agreements between the two countries. Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry signed a memorandum of understanding with his Cypriot counterpart in the field of health، as well as the signing of a number of cooperation agreements between the two countries. Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Yasser Al-Qadi signed also a memorandum of understanding in the field of business and communications.
President Sisi also witnessed the opening of the Egyptian-Cypriot Business Forum. He also delivered a speech in the forum expressing his hope that the business forum will achieve a qualitative leap in the economic relations between the two countries. Al-Sisi confirmed the Egyptian government’s commitment to develop the legislative structure and remove all the bureaucratic obstacles facing investors. "The distinguished political relations between Egypt and Cyprus represent a constructive model for the Mediterranean countries”، Al-Sisi added.
"The establishment of the Egyptian-Cypriot Business Forum for the first time on the sidelines of this visit will undoubtedly contribute to enhancing dialogue and activating communication opportunities between investors in the two countries،" Al-Sisi said.
For his part، the Cypriot President stressed، "Economic cooperation is the basis of the historical relations between Egypt and Cyprus، noting that there are about 38 cooperation agreements between Egypt and Cyprus covering many areas including tourism، education and the prevention of double taxation and health"
President Al-Sisi and the Greek Prime Minister announced the 2018 year as Egyptian-Greek friendship، stressing the importance of using this opportunity to highlight the positive results of the development of relations between the two countries.
The Political file، bilateral and regional issues
With regard to the political file، president Al-Sisi reiterated Egypt's firm support for the efforts of the Cypriot president to reunify Cyprus in accordance، in accordance with the related UN resolutions and international law، without any external interference.
The Egyptian president also affirmed Egypt's continued efforts to push for political solutions to solve the crises in the region.
