Dozens of Al-Azhar University students held a demonstration on Sunday to denounce Washington’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Egypt’s Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb announced his rejection to meet with U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence, who will visit Egypt on December 20, according to a statement issued by Al-Azhar Sheikhdom on Friday.
“How can I sit with those who granted what they do not own to those who do not deserve it,” Al-Tayeb expressed in the statement; alluding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Earlier on Wednesday، US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
Trump also announced that he had directed the State Department to begin preparations to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The governments of Turkey، Pakistan، Malaysia and Indonesia -- a country home to more Muslims than any other in the world -- all spoke out against the decision and protests broke out outside the US embassies in Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur.
