Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry held a meeting on Saturday with European Commissioner for Migration، Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos. The Foreign Ministry’s official spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said that، during their meeting، the two sides launched the first round of Egypt-EU institutional dialogue on migration with the aim of exchanging experiences and visions between the two parties in this field.
He added that Shoukry said that the immigration file became very important especially in light of high rates of illegal migrants across the Mediterranean Sea. He also pointed out to the importance of holding such a meeting on the eve of the International Day of Migrant، on 18 December. The meeting held at the foreign ministry headquarters، touched on migration issues and their impact in addition to the major role played by Egypt to confront illegal immigration.
The Foreign Ministry Spokesman stated that the meeting comes within the framework of distinguished relations currently witnessing by the two sides، especially after the Egyptian-European Partnership Council held in Brussels last July، as well as a number of visits paid by senior EU officials to Cairo. He added that this reflects the extent of increasing awareness of the strategic nature of the Egyptian-European partnership in enhancing cooperation in many vital areas، particularly immigration and counter-terrorism.
Abu Zeid also added that during the meeting، the two sides reviewed the views about the possible ways to confront illegal immigration. He pointed out that the Foreign Minister reviewed the Egyptian vision in this regard، which is based on an integrated approach to confront this phenomenon، taking into account the various developmental and social aspects that represent the root reasons for migration such as poverty، unemployment.
