Border guards managed to discover and destroy four tunnel openings used in smuggling people، ammunition and arms along borders in North Sinai.
In December، the Armed Forces destroyed three 4×4 vehicles and seized 1.44 million narcotic tablets، 866kg of cannabis and 5،400kg of hashish، according to a statement by the army on Monday. The forces also arrested 187 persons of different nationalities while attempting to illegally cross the borders. In addition، 27 suspects in smuggling cases were arrested. The suspects and seized objects were handed over to the competent authorities for legal action. Military operations in Sinai come as part of army's intensive efforts to secure the country’s borders and foil schemes and attempts aimed at undermining the stability of society and harming Egyptian national security. Egypt has been battling a violent Islamist insurgency mostly in North Sinai that gained traction in 2013 following the overthrow of Muslim Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi. The insurgents pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in late 2014. Hundreds of security force members have been killed as well as hundreds of militants.
