Dr. Mohamed Abdel Ati، Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation، stressed that it is not permissible to cancel the rice fines in order to preserve water resources in Egypt.
In a response to questions، by some MPs at the parliament's general session Wednesday، on raising fines for rice cultivation and allowing farmers to grow rice، the Minister said that farmers consume 8.000 cubic meters of water per feddan، while only 2000 cubic meters of water are consumed in wheat’s feddan.
He went on to say that، the irrigation ministry seeks to end all problems، including floods and the protection of beaches and low areas.
He stressed that there is a four-axes vision adopted by the ministry to address the crisis of water resources deficit، including purification، as the state spends 70 EGP billion on water purification، Rationalization of consumption، development، and the creation of an appropriate environment.
He pointed out، addressing the MPs، that the ministry pays much attention to provide drinking water not to grow rice.
