Sisi stresses longstanding Egypt-Ethiopia relations، amid Nile tension

President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi welcomed the Ethiopian Prime Minister and his accompanying delegation during their three-day visit to Egypt.
He added that، during the visit، the high joint committee is scheduled to be held for the first time at the level of the two countries’ leaders.


During the press conference held with the Ethiopian Prime Minister، he said that، during the last period، the two parties have endeavored to hold this important event to push forward the bilateral consultations، based on sincere desire to strengthen the bonds of friendship and brotherhood between the two countries.

Al-Sissi stressed that Egypt and Ethiopia have joint historical relationship over the years through the Nile River، which has been and still a link of integration and cooperation between the peoples of the two countries.

During the press conference، President Al-Sisi said that Egypt has previously proposed to mediate the World Bank in negotiations among Egypt، Sudan and Ethiopia on the controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Al-Sisi stressed that Egypt Egypt's strategic direction aims to consolidate the common interest with Ethiopia in all fields، noting that Egypt will spare no effort to achieve this.

Sisi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn met Thursday at Al-Ittihadia to address the bilateral relations between the two countries.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Desalegn arrived in Cairo on Wednesday accompanied by a high-profile delegation to attend the sixth meeting of the joint Egyptian-Ethiopian Higher Committee.

The last meeting was held three years ago and tackled bilateral cooperation in several fields، including education، health، agriculture and fisheries.

Desalegn’s three-day visit comes within the framework of the joint Egyptian-Ethiopian Committee، which was postponed several times since last December.
