In a form of confirming the return of Egypt to the forefront of the cultural scene and amid a global media crowd، the 49th edition of the Cairo International Book Fair (CIBF)، kicked off last Friday by the Minister of Culture، Dr. Inas Abdel Dayam، at the Cairo International Convention Centre، in Nasr City، where it witnessed a high turnout from Egyptians since then.
The Minister of Culture expressed her happiness for the huge participation of the various publishing houses، stressing that the intensive activities of Cairo International Book Fair produce a cultural movement that reflects positively on the society، aiming to achieve development at all levels، and promoting public thought to face attempts of destruction and sabotage.
The CIBF runs from January 26 to February 10، with the theme for the year is "Soft Power: How?”، and CIBF's Person of the Year is Abdel Rahman al-Sharkawi.
The late Egyptian writer Abdel Rahman al-Sharkawi was chosen as the character of this edition due to his long history of writing about Algeria. He is the scenarist of Djamila Bouhired، in addition to his hundred literary novels، as well as his journalistic long history.
The 49th edition will host a lot of new activities for the first time، such as establishing theaters، cinema halls and fine arts halls، in addition to increasing the number of books dedicated to children.
It compromises 1194 pavilions along 117 stands to sell the books.
In this edition، 27 nations will participate in the Book Fair، which includes 15 Arab، 10 foreign and 3 African countries، with Algeria as the guest of honor of this edition.
Algeria is officially participating in the book fair's activities through a number of writers and writers and some 70 publishers، about 10% of Algerian publishers.
Meanwhile، the participating Arab countries include Morocco، Saudi Arabia، Bahrain، Jordan، Kuwait، Oman، Algeria، United Arab Emirates، Syria، Libya، Iraq، Lebanon، Yemen، Palestine، and Tunisia.
The participating African countries include Sudan، Somalia، and Ethiopia.
The participating foreign countries include America، Greece، Germany، France، Russia، Italy، China، Paraguay، and India.
In this edition، the number of publishers has reached 867 publishers، including 367 Arab publishers، 9 foreigners، and 3 Africans، 485 Egyptian publishers (7 press organizations and 34 government institutions)
Cairo University، Ain Shams University and the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology participated in the 49th edition.
Center for Foreign Languages and Specialized Translation at the Cairo University، participates with a collection of the most important books translated by the Center from English، French، German، Hebrew، and Persian، under the auspices of the President of Cairo University، Dr. Mohamed Othman Al-Khasht.
The Manager of Center for Foreign Languages and Professional Translation Amany Badawy، said that there is a diversity in the fields of books and literature that the Center shares in psychology، philosophy، history، and literature.
For its part، the Faculty of Arts at the Ain Shams University، organized "I am a volunteer" campaign to instill the spirit of volunteering in the minds of the youth، in the belief of the importance of youth participation in cultural and literary forums and in order to establish a culture of volunteering among young people.
The University in collaboration with the Egyptian General Book Organization held a press conference to launch the campaign to prepare and train the young volunteers for the 49th book fair.
Dr. Suzanne Al-Kalani، dean of the Faculty of Arts and member of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation and member of the Coordination Committee of the Book Fair، explained that the campaign launched by the Egyptian General Book Organization through social networking sites and the media received about 500 volunteers.
She stressed that the campaign emphasizes on the importance of instilling the spirit of volunteerism in the minds of youth، and a sign that the university students are always the starting point in serious fruitful cultural and scientific initiatives.
Meanwhile، the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology presented in the scientific culture sector، a wide range of books of scientific culture، including encyclopedias، 3D cartoons، science magazine and all the academic publications.
The Academy participation in the framework of contributing with the publishing houses and other state institutions to promote the culture of science and technology and innovation and simplify science، and creating an encouraging environment for research and scientific thinking، which comes in line with the state’s “Science، Technology and Innovation Plan 2030”.
In this context، President of the Academy of Scientific Research، Dr. Mahmoud Saqr، stated that the Academy is the largest publisher in Egypt in the field of scientific culture and the simplification of science، where the Academy annually publishes series of scientific books، in efforts aimed at spreading culture and enrich science in a scientific manner and to shed light on Egyptian scientists، which are designed to address the non-specialized and specialized readers.
The Academy has published 43 books in various scientific fields. The Academy is also one of the largest publishing houses in the Arab region and Africa in the field of scientific references and journals.
A number of organizations are also participating for the first time in the book fair including، Ministry of Education، Technical Education، Ministry of Higher Education، Arab Writers Union، and Emirates Writers Union.
This year’s book fair is paying close attention to the children through a variety of activities offered by the General Egyptian Book Organization، General Authority for Cultural Palaces، National Center For Culture Child، the National Council for Motherhood and Childhood، which organized a daily program entitled “Bus.com”، and Egypt Air، offers a workshop entitled (Teer Enta).
The book fair also set a special children's corner dedicated to the names of influential personalities، such as Baba Sharo، Abla Fadliya، Mohammed Fawzi Theater and the late children's author، Magdy Abdel Rahim، which also include artistic and cultural workshops and activities in handicrafts and waste recycling.
The General Egyptian Book Organization for the first time allocates an book fair for the children، in addition to a hall full of poets and poetry، seminars and evenings during the working hours of the book fair from participators from all county governorates and the Arab world.
The book fair witnessed a number of new activities for the first time، topped by a camp called "Al Badia Camp" which presents the colors of the arts of the Sinai people and their culture، where there are a number of handicrafts by the "Bedouin Sinai"، in the framework of the country’s efforts to take care of the Sinai people.
The book fair also witnessed for the first time the establishment of a camp for Al-Azhar، which is scheduled to hold a number of religious events and seminars، in addition to a number of valuable religious books، as part of the State's efforts to renewal of the Interreligious Dialogue.
Al-Azhar also presented many publications and studies on the renewal of Islamic thought and sciences، the culture of peace، tolerance، and coexistence.
Al-Azhar presented dozens of books، which includes an analytical vision of a number of scholars on terrorism and its threat to world peace، and how to confront this danger through a statement of the philosophy of citizenship and peaceful coexistence، as well as the consolidation of the concepts of peace، mercy، justice، and equality.
Meanwhile، The Al-Azhar Observatory presented many new titles and publications to combat extremism، among them the series "The situation of Muslims in the world".
This series focuses on the details of the religious situation of the Muslims globally and the challenges facing them، in the framework of follow-up and reports issued by the Observatory on the Muslims issues in various parts of the earth and an attempt to uprise their situation.
On the other hand، within the academic wing، a three-dimensional Al-Azhar cartoon series will be screened، which is a joint production of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology and Al-Azhar Al-Sharif، which is screened in Ramadan each year، as well as the series "Noor and the Gate of History"، which highlights the history of Al-Azhar and the role of Arab Muslim scholars in enriching humanity with their sciences، through animation.
Meanwhile، Noor magazine has received a large number of visitors to browse the issue of the magazine issued by the World Association for al-Azhar Graduates، sponsored and under the auspices of Al- Azhar Grand Imam Dr. Ahmad al-Tayeb
The magazine features a scientific and cultural content، interesting and attractive، and is intended for boys and girls from the age of 8 to 18، and the can be viewed on mobile phones.
The magazine aims to provide a culture that suits the identity of the Egyptian and Arab children، bearing the values of truth، goodness and beauty derived from the essence of the divine religions، compassion and acceptance of the other، rejecting fanaticism، hatred and violence and training it on logical reasoning، and strengthen his love and belonging to the homeland، and his enthusiasm for work and excellence in all scientific، sports and artistic fields.
The General Authority for Cultural Palaces، headed by Dr. Ahmed Awad participates for the first time with 30 books including، al-Maqrizi book، Divine Comedy and five issues in el abour series tells about the history and victories of the Egyptian army through the ages of the reign of Muhammad Ali Pasha so far and the Egyptian army's participation in Mexico and Russia، in addition to 4 interactive workshops for children's activities every day.
The book fair also offers a cultural and artistic program divided into 16 official halls.
It is expected that the number of visitors to five million visitors this year، an increase of one million visitors from last year.
