Director-general of the Giza Plateau Ashraf Mohy El-Den said that the pyramids area has witnessed heavy turnouts at the major tourist destination.

He said that total turnout of the past two weeks، coinciding with first-semester school break، has amounted to about 173 thousand visitors، including 14،513 foreign tourists.

Tourism in Egypt، a major source of its national income and foreign currency reserve، was dealt a further blow by the Russian airplane crash in North Sinai in October، 2015 after which several countries، including Britain and Russia، suspended their flights to Egypt.

The aggravated the recession in the country's already ailing tourism sector due to political instability.

Even before the Russian plane crash، Egypt suffered a sharp decline in tourists due to three years of political turmoil، including two mass uprisings that toppled two presidents، forcing several countries to ban their citizens from travelling to Egypt for safety reasons.

In May، Egypt has drafted this month a new bill that would impose hefty fines on tourist harassers as part of the state’s efforts to attract additional tourists.

As a part of the continued efforts to revive tourism، the National Museum of Civilization has been inaugurated and the highly anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to open its doors in 2018.

The Brand New Nile Ritz Carlton is open for business and many luxury hotels have been busy renovating as tourism ramps up for 2018. The gorgeous Mena House Hotel in Cairo may soon be a Marriott and the legendary Sofitel Old Cataract Hotel is the best place to stay prior to commencing your Nile cruise with Abercrombie & Kent aboard the Sanctuary Sun Boat III.
