The Giza pyramids area، the oldest of the seven wonders of the ancient world، witnessed heavy turnouts on Friday.

Friday، was the last day of the mid-term school break، which witnessed a heavy presence from visitors at the major tourist destination amounting to about 30 thousand.

Tourism in Egypt، a major source of its national income and foreign currency reserve، was dealt a further blow by the Russian airplane crash in North Sinai in October، 2015 after which several countries، including Britain and Russia، suspended their flights to Egypt.

The aggravated the recession in the country's already ailing tourism sector due to political instability.

Even before the Russian plane crash، Egypt suffered a sharp decline in tourists due to three years of political turmoil، including two mass uprisings that toppled two presidents، forcing several countries to ban their citizens from travelling to Egypt for safety reasons.

In May، Egypt has drafted this month a new bill that would impose hefty fines on tourist harassers as part of the state’s efforts to attract additional tourists.

As a part of the continued efforts to revive tourism، the National Museum of Civilization has been inaugurated and the highly anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to open its doors in 2018
