CIBF 2018: Here's what happened on final days of Cairo International Book Fair

The 49th edition of the Cairo International Book Fair (CIBF)، resumed its activities during the last days of the book fair, however, with the start of the second terms in schools، the number of people flocking the book fair began to decline.

Nonetheless، the visitors were welcomed by volunteer teams، who had spread in the pavilions and cultural events sites.

During their visit، the fairgoers were treated to a mixture of cultural experiences، in addition to everything else the book fair had to offer.

The Department of Cultural Development and Community Communication of the Ministry of Antiquities، in collaboration with the Islamic and Coptic monuments sector، participated in an awareness program entitled "A Story behind Every Palace".

The program presented the fairgoers with a photographic collection of a number of Egypt’s ancient palace، to introduce them، and to promote the audience to visit them، while providing a brief information of its history.

The activities also included a number of manual clothes workshops for، in addition to other workshops، and a number of cultural entertainment activities.

Director General of the Department Dr. Rasha Kamal، was keen to follow-up the events، and expressed her happiness on its success، and on the children’s interest to it، especially showing interest with the “story behind the palace”، writing hieroglyphs، coloring of Tutankhamun mask.

The children also showed interest in the ancient Egyptian make-up، and the ancient Egyptian tattoos.

The book fair also hosted a cultural seminar to discuss a book entitled “Libyan women's novels"، by Journalist Yunus al-Fannadi.

During the seminar، the book’s author announced that he had dreamed of visiting the Cairo International Book Fair، and now here he was a guest at the exhibition to discuss his book.

The author analyzes the writing of the female Libyan authors، which reveals the openness of the narrative text of Libyan women.

The book includes literary articles reviews about five Libyan novels، "Migration outside the orbit of pregnancy" by Moroccan novelist Razan Naeem،"Qusayl" by Aisha Ibrahim، "Screaming Downstairs" by Dr. Fatima Al-Hajji، "Garion's graduates" by Aisha Al-Asfar، and "Slaves barns” by Najwa Ben Shtwan، he added

During the seminar Dr. Farida Al-Masri، also reviewed her novel "The Legend of the Sea".

Al-Fannadi revealed that the book is an addition in the field of studying the Libyan novel، and expressed her wish to translate it into a foreign language to give the Libyan novel a broad presence in the world literary scene.

He pointed that woman is human beings with a very important role. Women's literature in Libya has evolved a lot in terms of the development of the age in which we live، stressing that the development of women's literature in Libya is related to the development of society as a whole.

"The Libyan woman is a writer and creative since ancient times، and culture is a basic message aimed at creating a link between humans and each other.”

Meanwhile، the Saudi pavilion at the book fair witnessed the needlework of part of Kaaba covering، which is being assembled next to other pieces، to be used on the honorable Kaaba on Arafat day.

For his part، Director of the Library of Grand Mosque in Mecca، Mohammed bin Ghaleb al-Bqami revealed to “Sada el Balad” website، that the part that is being assembled at the book fair is called “Al Qandeel (the lamp)، is made with strings made of copper coated with gold water.

The cover of the Kaaba overlaps with the handcrafts represented in needlework، industrial and technological works represented in the textile industry specialized to the Kaaba، he added.

He explained that the Kaaba is fully embroidered with handwork، and a large part of the Kaaba was completed.
It is supposed to be assembled at the King Abdul Aziz Complex to cover the Kaaba in preparation for placing it on the Kaaba on the 9th of next Hijra.

A large number of the fairgoers were keen to participate in the embroidery of the Kaaba.

In a form of confirming the return of Egypt to the forefront of the cultural scene-the 49th edition of the Cairo International Book Fair (CIBF)، kicked off January 27 by the Minister of Culture، Dr. Inas Abdel Dayam، at the Cairo International Convention Centre، in Nasr City، where it witnessed a high turnout from Egyptians since then.

The Minister of Culture expressed her happiness with the huge participation of the various publishing houses، stressing that the intensive activities of the book fair produce a cultural movement that reflects positively on the society، aims to achieve development in all fields، and promotes public with means to face attempts of destruction and sabotage.

The CIBF runs from January 27 to February 10، with the theme for the year is "Soft Power: How?”، and CIBF's Person of the Year is Abdel Rahman al-Sharkawi.

The late Egyptian writer Abdel Rahman al-Sharkawi was chosen as the character of this edition due to his long history of writing about Algeria. He is the scenarist of Djamila Bouhired، in addition to his hundred literary novels، as well as his journalistic long history.

The 49th edition hosts a lot of new activities for the first time، such as establishing theaters، cinema halls and fine arts halls، in addition to increasing the number of books dedicated to children.

It compromises 1194 pavilions along 117 stands to sell the books.

In this edition، 27 nations will participate in the Book Fair، which includes 15 Arab، 10 foreign and 3 African countries، with Algeria as the guest of honor of this edition.

Algeria is officially participating in the book fair's activities through a number of writers and writers and some 70 publishers، about 10% of Algerian publishers.

Meanwhile، the participating Arab countries include Morocco، Saudi Arabia، Bahrain، Jordan، Kuwait، Oman،

Algeria، United Arab Emirates، Syria، Libya، Iraq، Lebanon، Yemen، Palestine، and Tunisia.

The participating African countries include Sudan، Somalia، and Ethiopia.

The participating foreign countries include America، Greece، Germany، France، Russia، Italy، China، Paraguay، and India.

In this edition، the number of publishers has reached 867 publishers، including 367 Arab publishers، 9 foreigners، and 3 Africans، 485 Egyptian publishers (7 press organizations and 34 government institutions)

The book fair also offers a cultural and artistic program divided into 16 official halls.

Noteworthy، the head of the General Egyptian Book Organization، and the CIBF official organizer Dr. Haitham Al-Haj، announced that the number of visitors to the book fair reached 3.7 million visitors on the 11th day.

He stressed that it was the citizens who had won this year in proving that the reading rate has developed، through their keenness to visit the book fair.

Haitham al-Hajj told the Middle East News Agency on Wednesday that the sales of General Egyptian Book Organization publications amounted this year to 300 million pounds، while، the sold publications surpassed 200 thousand copies.

Taha Hussein's book " Al-Fitna Al-Kubra” Among the Authority’s best-selling books، pointing that the books that review extremist thought and terrorism accounted for 70% of sales، which reflects on the interest of the book fair’s audience، especially the youth، he added.

It is expected that the number of visitors to five million visitors this year، an increase of one million visitors from last year.
