Cairo International Book Fair 49th edition concludes today

On the 15th day، the Cairo International Book Fair (CIBF) concludes its forty-ninth edition، marking another top standing edition، which witnessed various top standing showcases، great book deals، and greater participation from both the visitors and the pavilions، as well as witnessed the debating of new pavilions and sections for the first time.
The 49th edition of the Cairo International Book Fair (CIBF)، resumes its activities for the final day، with a concert performed by well-known singer، Ali El Haggar.
The final day will also witness an award ceremony for the best books in various fields، aid the attendee of Minister of Culture Dr. Inas Abdel Dayem، and The head of the General Egyptian Book Organization، and the CIBF official organizer Dr. Haitham Al-Haj، in the main hall.
The ceremony will also witness the screen of a documentary film of this person of the year، on Abdel Rahman al-Sharkawi biography، which was produced by National Center for Theater، Music، and Folklore، headed by the great director Mohamed El Kholy.
The Center will also present "The Night of Words" play by the late writer Abdul Rahman Al-Sharkawi.

In a form of confirming Egypt’s return to the forefront of the cultural scene-the 49th edition kicked off January 27 by the Minister of Culture، Dr. Inas Abdel Dayam، at the Cairo International Convention Centre، in Nasr City، where it witnessed a high turnout from Egyptians.
In statements، the Minister of Culture expressed her happiness with the huge participation of the various publishing houses، stressing that the intensive activities of the book fair produce a cultural movement that reflects positively on the society.
On the 11th day، the Minister of Culture visited the book fair again، and stated in press remarks that the success of the book fair، is a unique case that reflects a real cultural renaissance witnessed by Egypt and an unprecedented public awareness، pointing that its success and high turnout from all segments of the public is the result of cumulative experience of decades of sincere efforts made by those held posts in various sectors of culture.
Abdel-Dayem praised the various events that are presented during the book fair as well as the high-level services that are provided to visitors.
The CIBF ran from January 27 to February 10، with the theme for the year is "Soft Power: How?”، and CIBF's Person of the Year is Abdel Rahman al-Sharkawi.

In this edition، 27 nations participated in the book fair، which included 15 Arab، 10 foreign and 3 African countries، with Algeria as the guest of honor of this edition.
Algeria officially participated in the book fair's activities through a number of writers and writers and some 70 publishers، about 10% of Algerian publishers.
Meanwhile، the participating Arab countries included Morocco، Saudi Arabia، Bahrain، Jordan، Kuwait، Oman، Algeria، United Arab Emirates، Syria، Libya، Iraq، Lebanon، Yemen، Palestine، and Tunisia.
The participating African countries included Sudan، Somalia، and Ethiopia.
The participating foreign countries included America، Greece، Germany، France، Russia، Italy، China، Paraguay، and India.
In this edition، the number of publishers has reached 867 publishers، including 367 Arab publishers، 9 foreigners، and 3 Africans، 485 Egyptian publishers (7 press organizations and 34 government institutions)
The book fair also offered a cultural and artistic program divided into 16 official halls.

-Where culture meets- The book fair hosted over the Course of 15 days a variety of seminars، workshops، and discussions sessions، including a seminar on “Egyptian Treasures in the Egyptian Deserts”، a cultural seminar entitled "Youth Initiative for Culture Competition" to evaluate the work of 20 contestants who presented ideas for initiatives in the competition.
During the competition، the contestants presented a presentation of the ideas of their projects، which was most of them were praised by the jury members، who stressed on the importance of the competition in directing the creative energies that exist within the youth in different fields.
Mustafa Azab، who came up with the idea of the completion، said that it aims to support all the initiatives launched by the youth in the fields of culture and the arts، which will benefit the society by creating cultural industries with a youthful creativity.
On the other hand، the Egyptian Feminist Union held a roundtable discussion under the title "Women and Sustainable Development"، chaired by Dr.Huda Al-Tahawi، to discuss the challenges Egyptian women face and the means to develop a national agenda for the urgent needs of women، amid the attendee of a number of MPs and female leaders and media anchors.
The book fair also hosted a seminar held under the title “Egyptian-Russian cultural relations... challenges and potentials" which stressed on the importance of strengthening cultural cooperation between the Egypt and Russia and to boosting its bilateral relations on the political level، managed by Sharif Gad، amid the attendee of a number of officials and intellectuals، including، the Head of the foreign cultural relations sector، Dr. Hisham Murad.
Meanwhile، on the 10th day، the book fair hosted a seminar by Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Waly، during which، she expressed her happiness with the Cairo International Book Fair and the country’s keenness to establish it every year.
"I was eager to attend the book fair with the parents to own different books" she said.
“The most striking part of the book fair is the large presence of the youth، In addition to the heavy presence of women at the book fair، which is a proof that we are living in a good cultural state”.
"The Ministry of Solidarity is an old ministry that cares for the needs of poor people، in addition to the subsidies and care provided by the ministry in major disasters. The ministry also cares for people with special needs and expatriates، in addition to caring for addicts. The ministry works in the service of the Egyptian citizen - from cradle to grave” she added.
On the other hand، the Cairo International book fair main hall witnessed a discussion about the creativity of Tunisian author Mahmoud Messadi، managed by Rania Ahmed، amid the attendee of a number of intellectuals including، literary critic Dr. Mohamad Ṭarshunah، literary critic Dr. Khalid Al-Ghuraibi، both who delivered a speech on Messadi.
Meanwhile، in the context of Egypt’s President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi declaration in 2017، at the National youth conference، that 2018 is “the year of disabled people”، and in order to shed light on them as Egypt’s society potential force that needs to be rehabilitated and cared for، the book fair hosted a seminar entitled "The Challenge of Disability… The Way to the Future" at the Youth Forum at the "Mohammed Abu al Majd” hall، managed by Ahmed Farran، and with the participation of Dr. Aya Ramadan، Dr. Norhan Suleiman، Abla Adel، and Ahmed Riad Abu Hamaila.
Meanwhile، in the Children's Camp for technical workshops and cultural meetings "Baba Sharou"، a number of Manual workshops activities continued، including workshops by the Egyptian General Book Authority، in addition to cultural competitions for the development of children's skills and abilities took place.
On the other hand، In the Majdi Abdul Rahim Corner، the Heritage Research Center of the National Library and Documentation Center also participated in a series of workshops، the first workshop entitled "heritage simplification for the youth”، presented by Dr. Noura Abdel-Azim.
-First times- The 49th Cairo International Book Fair in collaboration with the General Book Authority will hold "FIFA 2018" video game tournament، for the first time، in an attempt to revive the entertainment section at the book fair and to provide all that is new for the fairgoers.
The tournament is organized by the Cairo International Book Fair in cooperation with the Egyptian Federation for Electronic Games، held at the Social Fund For Development hall.
The winners of the tournament will receive prizes and certificates from the Egyptian Federation for Electronic Games، which witnessed a large turnout from different age groups.
At another side، the visitors crowed over an Arab calligraphy artist who writes their names in beautiful lines and decorations، one can pass the place and return after long hours، only to find the artist still in his place.
On his first day، he wrote over seven hundred names of visitors.
On the fifth day of the book fair، a group of young adults was noticed for performing recreational and cultural work such as writing the visitors names in Arabic calligraphy and in hieroglyphics for free، in an attempt to ease the tired crowd.
-‘Your are stronger than drugs’ campaign - The book fair witnessed the extensive presence of "You are stronger than drugs" campaign of Addiction Treatment and Abuse Fund of the Ministry of Social Solidarity، to raise awareness of the damage of addiction.
Ahmed Farrag، one of the campaign's volunteers، said that the campaign is held to introduce the dangers of addiction and raise the young adult’s awareness about the dangers of addiction and its health and social dangers.
He pointed out that the campaign is also aimed to raise the children’s awareness in an indirect way through drawing workshops organized in the book fair، to deliver the idea to the children in a simple way.
-Bestselling books- The head of the General Egyptian Book Organization، and the CIBF official organizer Dr. Haitham Al-Haj، announced that the number of visitors to the book fair reached 3.7 million visitors on the 11th day.
He stressed that it was the citizens who had won this year in proving that the reading rate has developed، through their keenness to visit the book fair.
Haitham al-Hajj told the Middle East News Agency that the sales of General Egyptian Book Organization publications amounted this year to 300 million pounds، while، the sold publications surpassed 200 thousand copies.
Taha Hussein's book " Al-Fitna Al-Kubra” Among the Authority’s best-selling books، pointing that the books that review extremist thought and terrorism accounted for 70% of sales، which reflects on the interest of the book fair’s audience، especially the youth، he added. Al Haj revealed that the Organization and the book fair’s management are working to create new tools for the book fair’s development، which will be announced at the end of the book fair.
He pointed out that the book fair will celebrate "Golden Jubilee" in the next year، where the organization has been preparing for it months ago so that the event can be appropriate to hold Egypt’s name and the book fair in particular.

The Center will also present "The Night of Words" by the late writer Abdul Rahman Al-Sharkawi.
-Sayed Hegab- The Creativity Forum، at the "Makkawi Said" pavilion، hosted the seminar "The journey of a writer and a book"، about the great poet Sayed Hegab، and his experience and a critical reading of his work، chaired by Poet Mohamed Ahmed Bahgat.
During the seminar، Mohamed announced the publication of Sayed Hegab full work by the Egyptian General Book Organization، which includes 7 books، two of which will be debuted for the first time.
He also unveiled details about the new editions and its most important features.
Renowned Egyptian poet and songwriter Sayed Hegab has left us on January 25 at the age of 77، after a battle with disease.
He ruled the throne of drama with his soundtracks for many years، where his repertoire includes a number of famous TV series including، "Lyaly El-Helmya"، "elshahd wel dmoa"، "al layl w akhro"، "Hawanem Garden city"، and "Arabesk".
-Participants- Cairo University، Ain Shams University and the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology participated in the 49th edition.
Center for Foreign Languages and Specialized Translation at the Cairo University، participated with a collection of the most important books translated by the Center.
For its part، the Faculty of Arts at the Ain Shams University، organized "I am a volunteer" campaign to instill the spirit of volunteering in the minds of the youth، in the belief of the importance of youth participation in cultural and literary forums and in order to establish a culture of volunteering among young people.
The University in collaboration with the Egyptian General Book Organization held a press conference to launch the campaign to prepare and train the young volunteers for the 49th book fair.
Dr. Suzanne Al-Kalani، dean of the Faculty of Arts and member of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation and member of the Coordination Committee of the Book Fair، explained that the campaign launched by the Egyptian General Book Organization through social networking sites and the media received about 500 volunteers.
She stressed that the campaign emphasizes on the importance of instilling the spirit of volunteerism in the minds of youth، and a sign that the university students are always the starting point in serious fruitful cultural and scientific initiatives.
Meanwhile، the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology presented in the scientific culture sector، a wide range of books of scientific culture، including encyclopedias، 3D cartoons، science magazine and all the academic publications.
The Academy participation in the framework of contributing with the publishing houses and other state institutions to promote the culture of science and technology and innovation and simplify science، and creating an encouraging environment for research and scientific thinking، which comes in line with the state’s “Science، Technology and Innovation Plan 2030”.
In this context، President of the Academy of Scientific Research، Dr. Mahmoud Saqr، stated that the Academy is the largest publisher in Egypt in the field of scientific culture and the simplification of science، where the Academy annually publishes series of scientific books، in efforts aimed at spreading culture and enrich science in a scientific manner and to shed light on Egyptian scientists، which are designed to address the non-specialized and specialized readers.
The Academy has published 43 books in various scientific fields. The Academy is also one of the largest publishing houses in the Arab region and Africa in the field of scientific references and journals.
A number of organizations are also participating for the first time in the book fair including، Ministry of Education، Technical Education، Ministry of Higher Education، Arab Writers Union، and Emirates Writers Union.
The General Authority for Cultural Palaces، headed by Dr. Ahmed Awad participates for the first time with 30 books including، al-Maqrizi book، Divine Comedy and five issues in el abour series tells about the history and victories of the Egyptian army through the ages of the reign of Muhammad Ali Pasha so far and the Egyptian army's participation in Mexico and Russia، in addition to 4 interactive workshops for children's activities every day.
-Saudi pavilion- On the 13th day، the book fair witnessed the needlework of part of Kaaba covering، which is being assembled next to other pieces، to be used on the honorable Kaaba on Arafat day.
For his part، Director of the Library of Grand Mosque in Mecca، Mohammed bin Ghaleb al-Bqami revealed to “Sada el Balad” website، that the part that is being assembled at the book fair is called “Al Qandeel (the lamp)، is made with strings made of copper coated with gold water.
The cover of the Kaaba overlaps with the handcrafts represented in needlework، industrial and technological works represented in the textile industry specialized to the Kaaba، he added.
He explained that the Kaaba is fully embroidered with handwork، and a large part of the Kaaba was completed.
It is supposed to be assembled at the King Abdul Aziz Complex to cover the Kaaba in preparation for placing it on the Kaaba on the 9th of next Hijra.
A large number of the fairgoers were keen to participate in the embroidery of the Kaaba.
-Children’s camp- The book fair also set a special children's corner dedicated to the names of influential personalities، such as Baba Sharo، Abla Fadliya، Mohammed Fawzi Theater and the late children's author، Magdy Abdel Rahim، which also include artistic and cultural workshops and activities in handicrafts and waste recycling.
Meanwhile، the National Council for Motherhood and Childhood، which organized a daily program entitled “Bus.com”، and Egypt Air، offers a workshop entitled (Teer Enta).
The General Egyptian Book Organization for the first time allocates a book fair for the children، in addition to a hall full of poets and poetry، seminars and evenings during the working hours of the book fair from participators from all county governorates and the Arab world.
On the other hand، the Management of archaeological awareness of the Egyptian Antiquities Sector had organized several workshops for children under the title "Leave them with us and be comfortable"، where the parents can safely leave their children there and freely tour the book fair.
Head of the Egyptian archeology sector، Ayman Ashmawy revealed in press remarks that these kinds of workshops aim at the development of the archeological awareness of the child.
-Art pavilion- The art pavilion at the book fair presented for 15 days a variety of showcases for the visitors، including performances by Aswan Folkore troupe، Port Said Band for Arab Music، Luxor Folklore Troupe، and Halaib and Shalateen folklore Troupe.
The book fair witnessed a number of new activities for the first time، topped by a camp called "Al Badia Camp" which presents the colors of the arts of the Sinai people and their culture، where there are a number of handicrafts by the "Bedouin Sinai"، in the framework of the country’s efforts to take care of the Sinai people.
The book fair also witnessed a number of performances from the General Authority for Culture Palaces، as well as a play by psychiatric patients at Abbasiya hospital in cooperation with patients with neuropathy.
The play dealt with the psychological problems of the patients، including the society's view of their illness، social isolation، psychological and social rehabilitation of the patients، ways to get out of the crucible isolation and introversion affecting them and how to overcome them and involve them in public life.
The visitors were also treated to a number of performances by the special needs children's group، Shubra Al -Khaymah special needs choir، and to Bahtim choir، in continuation to the activities of the General Authority for Culture Palaces at the book fair.
On the other hand، the Egyptian Association of Russian and Soviet University Graduates organized a meet and greet on the Egyptian-Russian film "Smile You are in Egypt" at Youssef Chahine Hall، amid the presence of the film crew.
The meeting began with the screening the film’s trailer، followed by a meeting with the film crew، including، film producer Mohammed Al-Sharaf and director Khaled Mehran.
The film is based on a novel by the same name by the Russian writer Elena Srebriakova. She participated in the writing of script and dialogue with Emad Al-Sibai، and produced by Pyramids productions.
The work aims to promote Egyptian tourism in the world in general and Russia in particular.
The film is scheduled for premiere simultaneously at the Egyptian and Russian theaters، and co-starring a large number of Russian actors، including Munther Rihneh، Mohamed Nour، Ahmed Azmi، Yasser Al-Tobji، Ahmed Gamal Saeed and Ayman Mansour.
- Al-Azhar Al-Sharif - Al-Azhar Al-Sharif participates for the second year in the Cairo International Book Fair، but this year's participation was characterized by strong and effective attendance، which can be observed once entering the fairground.
Al Azhar section this year has not neglected the attention of the shape and attention to the content، which can be easily noticed when you go there، starting with the choice of a distinct location and the ideal space and taking into consideration the presence of several entrances and exits that facilitate the flow of visitors، Which expresses the character of Al-Azhar and its unique spirit، in addition to the use of the latest technical means to provide a scientific content to the public، thus combining the heritage of history and heritage، and the modernity of means and methods.
The section has been divided into several categories comprised of various organizations and activities of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif.
The most prominent is the "Islamic Research Complex" corner، which offered a collection of 130 books and studies that varies from language and jurisprudence، thought and belief.
Al-Azhar also presented many publications and studies on the renewal of Islamic thought and sciences، the culture of peace، tolerance، and coexistence.
Al-Azhar Al-Sharif participated at the book fair with a number of valuable books including “Al-Azhar Al-Sharif library Encyclopedia” which comes in 28 volumes and produced by the library، which consists of approximately 50،000 manuscripts، objectively cataloged at the Al-Azhar Pavilion at the International Book Fair to facilitate researchers and students of science.
Al-Azhar books also included an analytical vision of a number of scholars on terrorism and its threat to world peace and how to confront this danger through a statement of the philosophy of citizenship and peaceful coexistence، as well as the consolidation of the concepts of peace، mercy، justice، and equality.
Al-Azhar also presented Al-Azhar curriculum to the public in the various stages and to explain the efforts of renewal and development that took place.
The visitors were keen to learn about the Islamic culture، which was developed under the guidance of the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb، to train Al-Azhar students to deal with contemporary issues and concepts such as terrorism، extremism، atonement، migration، community coexistence and citizenship.
Meanwhile، Al-Azhar Observatory presented many new titles and publications to combat extremism، among them the series "The situation of Muslims in the world".
This series focuses on the details of the religious situation of the Muslims globally and the challenges facing them، in the framework of follow-up and reports issued by the Observatory on the Muslims issues in various parts of the earth and an attempt to uprise their situation.
On the other hand، within the academic wing، a three-dimensional Al-Azhar cartoon series was screened، which is a joint production of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology and Al-Azhar Al-Sharif، which is screened in Ramadan each year، as well as the series "Noor and the Gate of History"، which highlights the history of Al-Azhar and the role of Arab Muslim scholars in enriching humanity with their sciences، through animation.
During the book fair، the Noor magazine has received a large number of visitors to browse the issue of the magazine issued by the World Association for al-Azhar Graduates، sponsored and under the auspices of Al- Azhar Grand Imam Dr. Ahmad al-Tayeb
The magazine features a scientific and cultural content، interesting and attractive، and is intended for boys and girls from the age of 8 to 18، and the can be viewed on mobile phones.
The magazine aims to provide a culture that suits the identity of the Egyptian and Arab children، bearing the values of truth، goodness and beauty derived from the essence of the divine religions، compassion and acceptance of the other، rejecting fanaticism، hatred and violence and training it on logical reasoning، and strengthen his love and belonging to the homeland، and his enthusiasm for work and excellence in all scientific، sports and artistic fields.
Among the activities that attracted hundreds of visitors at the book fair was "Al-Azhar Panorama"، a showroom that shows the history of Al-Azhar Sharif in an interesting cinematic presentation، through a panoramic screen that blends heritage and civilization with the latest multimedia science.
For the first time، the audience saw different elements of the history of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif via a visible and audible method in a coherent and attractive way.
The Islamic Research Academy at the Al-Azhar section presented a book entitled "Objective Perspectives" on humanitarian issues by Professor Mohieldin Afifi، Secretary General of the Islamic Research Academy. The book highlights some important intellectual issues and presents them in an objective manner.
The book discusses the issue of peace and the pillars of its achievement among different societies and cultures. It then reviews the Islamic perspective on human relations، discusses the issue of dialogue with youth and empowering them in life، and highlights the importance of scientific research.
The Observatory also offered a number of cultural seminars by professors and academics specialized to discuss these issues in depth.
"2018 year of Jerusalem" was the name of one of Al-Azhar categories، which comes after the invitation of the Grand Imam at the Al-Azhar World Conference to support Jerusalem to allocate 2018 the year of Jerusalem، and includes a section of the literature that emphasizes the Arabism of Jerusalem، most notably the book "Arabism of Jerusalem. Al-Azhar also allocated a special section of the Fatwa Committee consisted of a number of Al-Azhar scholars who receive visitors' questions on various religious aspects.
Al Azhar section also includes a corner for Al-Azhar gate and a cultural events hall where daily seminars for senior intellectuals and culture are held، and also contains a hall for those who temporarily wish to borrow and read books.
Al-Azhar University offered the visitors an integrated research and knowledge service through Al-Azhar University Central Library، which is full of hundreds of Arabic and foreign publications.

Al-Azhar pavilion also presented five books combating fanatical suspicions، and also presented at the Muslim Council of Elders corner a book entitled "Freedom and Citizenship: Diversity and Integration" from the work of the Al-Azhar Conference and the Muslim Council of Elders held in Cairo، in March 2017.
The book addresses a number of important studies and speeches delivered during the conference to senior scholars، intellectuals، politicians، scholars and clerics، Muslims and Christians، on freedom، diversity، and coexistence.
The book notes that Al-Azhar in the "Declaration of Citizenship and Coexistence" speech، delivered by the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb، at the end of the conference، stressed that the term "citizenship" is an authentic term in Islam، and stressed that the Muslim and Christian communities are renewing their brotherhoods and rejecting any attempts to divide them.
