Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria and Patriarch of Saint Mark Diocese congratulated the Coptic community as they observe the beginning of Lent on Wednesday.
Leading a Mass on Ash Wednesday in Wadi al-Natroun's Saint Bishoy Monastery، Pope Tawadros said that the Coptic Orthodox Holy Synod last year he decided to commemorate the martyrs and the wounded on February 15th as an annual day to remember all martyrs.
He added that the Orthodox Church issued a statement on the current operations carried out by the armed forces and police in Sinai to eliminate terrorism، stressing that the Egyptians values those efforts in order to maintain the security of Egypt and the safety of its people.
The Egyptian army announced on Friday the imminent launch of a wide-ranging operation aimed at targeting terrorist elements in the Sinai Peninsula، according to army spokesman Colonel Tamer al-Rifai.
Earlier on February 6، the critical care department of the Ismailia Health Directorate issued an announcement to major hospitals in the governorate to stay on standby starting February 6 until further notice.
According to the announcement، the hospitals are required to have a sufficient amount of medications، means to transport medications from one hospital to another and expand the state of emergency in all hospital for 24 hours.
Troubled North Sinai has been subject to many attacks targeting Coptic Christians، security forces in checkpoints and Sufi Muslims during Friday prayers.
In November، an attack on a mosque in Egypt’s North Sinai city of El-Arish killed at least 309 people and injured 109 others. The attack took place as worshippers marked the weekly Friday prayers at the mosque in the town of Al-Rawda in El-Arish.
