Health Minister، Dr. Khaled Megahed stressed on Tuesday that the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) detection initiative came within president’s Sisi instructions to eliminate HCV in Egypt by 2020.

In press statements to “MBC Masr 2”، Megahed added that about 1.5 million citizens have been cured from hepatitis C Virus، noting that there are not any waiting lists.

Moreover، he pointed out that a comprehensive health program to detect and treat people who infected with HCV in three months has been started.

Noteworthy, In 2014, Egypt stepped up its efforts to treat the virus، which can take a long time to show due to the nature of the symptoms which include fatigue and sickness.

The aim was to treat 300،000 people a year.

The programme is being supported by the World Health Organisation، and WHO Director General، Margaret Chan، praised the country's work on combating the widespread disease.

Egypt has also invested in televised campaigns to raise awareness about the disease and ways to treat it.
