The death toll from tragic road accident on the International Coastal Road has jumped to eight killed victims، and 22 other injured after a bus overturned.
The preliminary investigation said the the bus caught fire while on the road، the driver who lost control، attempted to evade another vehicle coming in the opposite direction، his attempt، however، resulted in that the bus overturned multiple times.
Immediately، ambulances and crews were seen rushing at the scene، while the firefighters were battling the flames of the blazing bus.
A probe was lunched with regard to the incident، and prosecution has been notified for further investigation.
Road accidents are common in Egypt due to badly maintained roads and poor enforcement of traffic laws.
Egypt has the highest rate of road accidents and related deaths in the Middle East، with an average of 12،000 people killed annually، according to the World Health Organization.
At least 12،295 were reported dead in road traffic fatalities during 2007، 70% males، 30% females، while 154،000 were reported injured in road traffic non-fatalities، within the same year، according to the official statistics agency.
Meanwhile،، at least 14،548 road accidents took place in Egypt in 2015.
Egypt loses about 12،000 lives due to road traffic crashes every year. It has a road traffic fatality rate of 42 deaths per 100،000 population. The majority (48%) of those killed are passengers of four-wheelers though pedestrians also constitute a significant proportion (20%).
