Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry heads today evening to Rome to chair the international conference which would be held to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Noteworthy that Egypt is the current president of the advisory commission for the UNRWA until June 30، 2018. Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid، official spokesman for the Foreign Ministry، said that the meeting is set to be held on the background of the severe financial deficit in the UNRWA’s budget in 2018.
He added that such deficit would lead to a decline in the UNRWA’s level of services provided to Palestinians. He pointed out that the current situation has to be reconsidered to find radical solutions to end the current crisis including، acquiring new partnerships with the donor countries. Abu Zeid added that Egypt stresses، in its contacts with all parties، the importance of removing any link between financial contributions for humanitarian purposes and any political demands. Abu Zeid also called on avoiding sudden decisions that jeopardize humanitarian action as a whole، especially as the time available for getting financial aids from donor countries is very tight. Abu Zeid pointed out to Egypt’s continuous support to the UNRWA، stressing the need to maintain its work and contributions coming to it till reaching a final solution to the Palestinian issue. He added that the common invitation extended by Egypt to hold such a meeting comes in continuation for the efforts exerted to end the Palestinian refugees’ issue.
