Al-Ahly SC Chairman Mahmoud El-Khatib underwent a successful spinal surgery in Germany early today، Al Ahly’s former player Osama Hosny told Sada El Balad satellite channel.
"Coach El-Khatib underwent the surgery an hour ago and he is currently under the influence of the anaesthetic،” Hosny said.
El Khatib headed to Germany on Wednesday for the surgery.
In December، El-Khatib has been elected as the Red Castle’s president after beating Mahmoud Taher.
Al-Khatib، 62، was one of the all-time best Al-Ahly and Egyptian players and used to serve as vice-president of the Cairo giants under the leadership of the club’s former president Hassan Hamdy until 2014.
Al-Khatib was voted the Arab Sportsman of the 20th Century and is the first Egyptian to win the African Player of the Year awarded at the time by French magazine France Football in 1983.
