Parliament approves consumer protection bill

The Parliament approved, in principle, the draft law proposed by the government to protect consumers.

The Parliament has adjourned today’s session and the final approval of the bill till another session since it requires two-third approval from the members.

The bill has imposed dissuasive penalties on those tampering with the nation’s food resources. The minimum penalty is 20،000 pounds and will not exceed 500،000 pounds in case of failing to reveal the price of goods.

Regarding citizens’ protection، the bill stipulated that severe penalty shall be imposed on misleading advertisements and the fine shall range between 10،000 pounds and 1 million pounds.

Concerning hoarding of important goods، the bill has imposed one-year -prison sentence and a fine of at least 100،000 pounds and not more than 1 million pounds for hiding important goods meant to be sold in markets.
