Hundreds of haredi demonstrators gathered in Jerusalem Sunday outside of an IDF draft office to protest against the arrest of a young woman who was arrested after refusing to comply with the draft board، as Arutz Sheva said.
Protesters clashed with police deployed to maintain order at the demonstration، hurling rocks and other objects at officers. Four officers were injured during the protest، police said.
Officers responded by throwing stun grenades into the crowd and with a crowd-control high-powered water cannon، police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP.
"The police used stun grenades and water cannons against rioters،" Rosenfeld said.
According to the organizers of the demonstration، five protesters were injured.
The demonstration was the latest event organized by the radical Yerushalmi Faction movement to protest against the arrest of haredi men and women for refusing to cooperate with draft officials.
The Yerushalmi Faction، founded by Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach، who passed away at age 86 in February، has demanded that the entire haredi community receive a blanket exemption from military service.
Currently، only religious women are granted exemptions، while men are eligible only for annual draft deferments if they are registered as full-time yeshiva students.
