In Egypt، the number of newly diagnosed patients with cancer is approximately 115 thousand cases per Year، and by 2050، it will increase to 350 thousand cases، according to an oncology professor and director of Ain Shams University Research Center، Dr. Hisham al-Ghazali.
Last year، the society launched a campaign to prevent and detect early tumors at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina، and in continuing for its efforts to defeat the tumor and believing that prevention is the best path to treatment، the Society decided to launch a new campaign to raise awareness and early detection of prostate tumors and colon tumors.
Noteworthy، between 30-50% of all cancer cases are preventable. Prevention offers the most cost-effective long-term strategy for the control of cancer، according to World Health Organization official website.
BGICS "Breast –Gynecological International Cancer Society" is a non-profit society aiming at promoting optimal standards of care for patients with breast gynecological cancers. In Egypt، more than108،600 newly diagnosed patients with cancer per Year with a risk of more than 15.5% of getting cancer before age 75 and an estimated number of 72،300 patient Dying yearly which highlights the important burden that cancer exerts on the population.
The magnitude is not accurately known. And available statistics are hospital-based with incomplete coverage، In parallel to the increasing incidence rates، there has been a steady increase in cancer-related mortality each year: cancer-related diseases are now the second leading cause of death in Egypt، behind cardiovascular diseases.
There is no single full detailed cancer registry in Egypt that collects data on cancer in Egypt and despite this growing burden of cancer in Egypt، it continues to receive low public health priority، not only because of limited resources but mainly due to a lack of awareness about the magnitude of the current and future cancer burden among healthcare providers، policy makers، the general public، and governmental health agencies. This is mainly attributed to the paucity of both hospital based and population based cancer registries.
