The remarkable writer Eduardo Heras León and the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria will be the subject of the XXVIII International Book Fair، Cuba، 2019، which was unveiled on Monday، in the city of Santiago de Cuba، during the closing ceremony of the current fair، cuba news reported. Juan Rodríguez Cabrera، president of the Cuban Book Institute، dedicated the event to Heras León، winner of the 2014 National Literature Prize، journalist، editor، literary and dance critic، while highlighting the rich cultural heritage that identifies the Algerian nation، and which will have space at the fair in its next edition. As is traditional، the San Carlos de La Cabaña Fortress in Havana will host the initial days of the largest cultural event in Cuba، which in 2019 will be from February 7 to 17، he said. He explained that in the recently concluded Fair، more than 600 literary novelties and more than four thousand titles were presented، and 1،292،744 copies were sold، 123،589 more than in 2017، which represented 10.6 percent more. Just over two million 147،000 people visited the spaces of the fair، and the average price of the texts was 7.5 Cuban pesos، he said، while highlighting the decrease in the monetary value compared to the previous year، which responds to the numerous efforts on the island to encourage reading. Rodriguez Cabrera recognized the work to celebrate the fair with quality، and highlighted in particular the work in the capital، as well as in the provinces of Pinar del Rio، Artemisa، Mayabeque، Villa Clara، Sancti Spíritus، Ciego de Ávila، Las Tunas، Santiago de Cuba، and in the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud. Due to the current boom in reading in modern information and communication media، Rodríguez Cabrera identified the challenges for future meetings as being to consolidate the promotion of digital books and the offer of truly cultural products. Launched last February 1 in Havana، the 27th Book Fair was dedicated to the People's Republic of China and to Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler، director of the Havana City Historian's Office، several of whose texts were first published by Ediciones Bologna، the institution's publishing house. Before the closing of the fair، the prestigious Spanish journalist and professor based in France، Ignacio Ramonet، presented in the city of Santiago the fourth edition of his volume One Hundred Hours with Fidel، and Abel Prieto Jiménez، Minister of Culture، the title Hasta siempre Fidel، with selection and notes by Rosa Miriam Elizalde. Beatriz Johnson Urrutia، Vice-President of the Council of State and President of the Provincial Assembly of People's Power in Santiago de Cuba، and Lázaro Expósito Canto، member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and first secretary of that political organization in the province of Santiago de Cuba، attended the closing ceremony of the literary event. Also present were prominent intellectuals، artists and heads of cultural institutions in the country.
