‘Yamish’: A Ramadan tradition

‘Yamish’ is a word that has been used in the Egyptian colloquial language dictionary since the Fatimid caliphate، meaning a combination of dried fruits as well as nuts and its family.

‘Yamish’ is a nutrient-rich annual tradition found during the holy month of Ramadan، made of proteins، fats، and oils.

It consists of nuts، Walnuts، hazelnut، almonds، pistachios، cashew، coconut، and date.

Yamish also consists of dried fruits consists of raisins، Al mhamshah (dried peach free of seeds)، Qamar Al-Deen، dried figs، prune، all fruits nutrient-rich in vitamins، metal، and fiber.

It is used for several ramadanic desserts such as stuffed dates، dates with milk، Qamar Al-Deen Pudding، Koshaf، and other recipes.

All shops and supermarkets display the Yamish in big quantities before and during the holy month of Ramadan.

Gamal Hassan، a date trader in El Sahel market، told “Sada ElBalad” that the date prices had decreased in the current period significantly compared to the previous years.

The price of Al balah el shabbi “popular date” range from LE 8 to LE 12، while Al sercote، and Al ganadlaya date prices scored from LE 20 to LE 60.

Meanwhile، Hany Farouk، another date trader in El Sahel market، stated that the dates have different types in form، size and taste، where Al sercote date are thin، while Al ganadlaya are big and tall، while the Shamiya is white in color and dry fit for soaking، and the Bertmodh date is red in color and soft، easy to eat.

The current demand for the date is weak compared to last year due to the 30% increase in prices of dates، where date average prices ranging from LE 15 to LE 24، Farouk added.

Meanwhile، "Umm Mohamed" a Yamish trader in El Sahel market، said that the prices of Yamish this year is the same prices of last year and accessible to everyone.

The prices of Qamar Al-Deen range from LE 8 to LE 30، and the price of Al mhamshah range from LE 75to LE 120، and prune prices range from LE 75 to LE 98.

Meanwhile، the pistachio prices range from LE 280، and cashew prices scored LE 320، and the hazelnut scored LE 160، while the price of raisins ranges from LE 30 to LE 50، and the coconut range from LE 65 to LE 75.

The buying and selling movement is at large in the current period and the turnout is expected to be increased in the coming period as the holy month of Ramadan approaches، she added.

In few days، and the holy month of Ramadan will arrive، and the Egyptians in the current period، are buying Yamish.
