“There is cooperation with Portugal to resettle a number of refugees residing in Egypt in Portugal”، Foreign Ministry Spokesman، Ambassador Ahmed Abo Zeid said.
He added that this cooperation is an affirmation of the principle of joint responsibility and strengthening cooperation between different countries in confronting the crisis of refugees and migrants. This global issue comes in the framework of the institutional dialogue between Egypt and the European Union about migration. Egypt exerts efforts with the European Union to confront such crisis.
In response to a query by a number of diplomatic editors about hosting Portugal refugees residing in Egypt، Abo zeid explained that Egyptian efforts with the European Union resulted in a framework and a general program of cooperation. ِAbo Zeid said that during the meeting held in Cairo between the two sides in December 2017.
The meeting included recommending the European countries to resettle numbers of refugees living in Egypt.
Egypt hosts hundreds of thousands of refugees. Britain، Germany، Sweden and the Netherlands have already resettled hundreds of refugees as implementing the recommendation of the meeting to activate the current cooperation program.
Abo zeid added that Portugal has recently resettled about 400 refugees residing in Egypt during 2018 and 2019. Portugal did that in full cooperation and coordination with the concerned national authorities and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Cairo (UNHCR).
