French President Emmanuel Macron rejected the proposal of his US counterpart، Donald Trump، to increase NATO defense spending to 4 percent.
"We reject the proposal of the American president، and we are working to strengthen the balance of NATO،" Macron said during a speech on the sidelines of the NATO summit held in Brussels today.
The US President said during his speech Thursday that trade relations between Washington and the alliance countries، "unfair،" noting that the United States contributes about 80 percent of the budget of NATO.
"I told many participants in the previous summit that budget defense spending must be increased،" claiming that "29 countries decided to raise their contribution، the United States pays 70 - 80 percent of the budget of the alliance."
"We are being treated badly in the commercial field، and this is unfair to the United States،" Trump said.
