US Secretary of State، Mike Pompeo arrived in Cairo Earlier Thursday، after a short visit to Iraq، as a part of a Middle East trip for talks on security and stability in the region.
In Cairo، Pompeo will meet with Egyptian officials to discuss economic and energy cooperation as well as major regional issues including Iran، Gaza، and counterterrorism.
While in the Egyptian capital، the secretary will also deliver a speech on the US’s “commitment to peace، prosperity، stability، and security in the Middle East.”
Moreover، Pompeo is set to visit New Administrative Capital (NAC) Mega Mosque and cathedral، during which he will meet Al-Azhar Grand Imam، Dr. Ahmed l-Tayyeb، and Pope Tawadros II، Pope of Alexandria، and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark.
US Embassy in Cairo Charge d’Affaires، Thomas Goldberger stressed on Wednesday that the embassy is looking forward to meet US Secretary of state، Mike Pompeo، during his expected visit to Cairo within the coming few hours.
In a tweet on his official page، “US Embassy in Cairo is looking forward to welcoming Secretary Pompeo and to supporting a very successful visit to our Egyptian friends and partners”.
Pompeo's Mideast tour is planned from January 8-15. The trip came nearly three weeks after President Donald Trump abruptly announced that he will withdraw the 2،000 US troops from Syria. Trump then said the pull-out will be slow and will take four months.
