The Lebanese director is dominating awards season، Emirates woman reported.

Nadine Labaki continues to break barriers with her film Capernaum، as it receives yet another award nomination. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced their 2019 nominees yesterday، which included Nadine’s feature in the ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ category.

The 44-year-old made history with her nomination، as she is the first Lebanese director، and first Arab woman to be nominated for a BAFTA. It is also only the second Arab film to be in the running for the prestigious British award، which is equivalent to the Academy Awards in the US.

She shared the nomination announcement on her Instagram، writing “And another one !!!! We’re extremely proud to announce that #Capharnaum is nominated for a BAFTA for Best Foreign Language Film! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the British Academy of Film and Television Arts for such an immense honor.”

Nadine’s third film follows a 12-year-old boy who resorts to stealing and begging to survive on the streets of Beirut، and proceeds to sue his parents for bringing him into a world of suffering. The majority of the film’s cast features non-professional actors، some of whom are actual street children.

Ever since it’s release، Capernaum has been gaining international acclaim and receiving nominations from distinguished associations. The film was up for the ‘Best Picture – Foreign Language’ award at the Golden Globes، but lost out to Netflix’s Roma.

The Lebanese director has also been shortlisted for an Oscar، with the official nominations being announced on January 22. She is the first Arab women to be shortlisted، and her film marks the second time that a Lebanese film is up for an Academy Award، as Ziad Doueiri’s The Insult was nominated in the same category last year

Following her loss at the Golden Globes، the first award show of the year، the director took to Instagram to share an interview from the red-carpet which she captioned، “We’ll get them next time!”
