Egyptian Catholic Center for Cinema Festival honors Arab celebrities on opening ceremony

Egyptian Catholic Center for Cinema Festival 67th edition kicked off on Friday evening، amid the attendee of a large number of Egyptian cinema celebrities.

The evening witnessed the honoring of many of celebrities for their artistic and cinematic influence in Egypt، including Farouk Al-Feshawi، Hesham Selim، Raghda، Ahmed Bedier، Eman، and Raja al-Jeddawi، and others.

The evening also featured honoring of singer Iman El Bahr Darwish over his music career.

Moreover، Amr Youssef received best actor award for his role in 2018’s TV series “Tayea”.

The 67th edition is dedicated to late prominent actor، Gamil Ratib، in recognition of his artistic distinguishing career.

Ratib، most famous for his role in 1962 film “Lawrence of Arabia”، had departed from our world on September 19 after a long battle with the disease at the age of 92.

Egyptian، Arab and Hollywood stars participating in El Gouna film festival 2nd Edition held a minute of silence for the late actor at the opening of the festival on September 20.

Numerous officials، celebrities and fans made press and media statements as well as took to their social media accounts to mourn Ratib.

Gamil Ratib (1926- 2018)
Gamil Abu-Bakr Ratib، known as Gamil Ratib was a French-Egyptian actor. He was born on November 28، 1926.

In 1940s، Gamil first appeared in the film “Al-forsaan al-thalaatha i.e. The three musketeers”، his family refused the idea and his scenes were removed.

He worked with Comedie Francais beginning in 1951. He returned to Egypt، his homeland، when he was 50، and participated in many Egyptian films.

Ratib traveled to Paris to study Law and Economy، yet he preferred studying Theatre and appeared in Shakespeare’s “Much ado without nothing (1947)”.

He Spoke English and French fluently and used to act in French plays during his stay in France.

He was a candidate for the role of "Khalid Safwan" in "El-Karnak" movie، but due to his strange accent which deprived him of the role so the role has gone to the actor "Kamal El-Shenawy".

"Gamil Ratib" also worked in the Tunisian and French cinema next to his participation in the Egyptian cinema.

He worked during his stay in Paris in small jobs besides acting to provide living expenses and then became a notable member of the “Comédie Française”.

American filmmaker Carol Reed presented Gamil Ratib in “Trapeze (1956)” along with Burt Lancaster، Tony Curtis and Gina Lollobrigida.

Ratib also showed in many TV series like; “Rehlat al-million i.e. The journey to be a millionaire” and “Sonbol ba’d al-million i.e. Sonbol..a millionaire”.

He played the villain his unique way and excelled in authoritarian and aristocrat roles especially with Faaten Hamaama in “Hekaaya waraa koll baab i.e. A story behind every door”.

Ratib received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Dubai International Film Festival in 2011.

He left behind a legacy of more than 174 artistic works.
