The United States is likely just weeks away from starting the withdrawal of ground troops from Syria، top U.S. commander overseeing American forces in the Middle East Joseph Votel said on Monday.
Votel warned that the exact timing of the withdrawal depends on the situation in Syria، where US-backed fighters are launching a recent attack on ISIS near the Iraqi border.
US forces have already begun withdrawing supplies from Syria. Asked if the pullout of more than 2،000 US troops would begin in days or weeks، he said: "Maybe weeks، but again this is all determined by the situation on the ground."
"With regard to the withdrawal... I think we are on track where we want to be،" he told reporters traveling with him during a visit to the Middle East.
Votel did not speculate about when the withdrawal would be completed.
