Young Egyptians trudge through mud to clean up the Nile
Hundreds of young Egyptians، including actress Mai El Gheity، trudged through the mud on the banks of the River Nile to collect tonnes of old plastic bags، bottles and other rubbish.

The teens and twenty-somethings also climbed into boats to reach trash floating through the center of Cairo during the “Youth for the Nile” clean-up - a program backed by the government and other groups to raise awareness of pollution.

Volunteer Dai Soliman worked on as people watched from a bridge.

“Those people above looking at us must have thought that they threw something in، and now there are some people who are collecting their garbage. So this is awareness، it is direct awareness in action،” she said.

The teams، most wearing the scheme’s white boots and blue and yellow gloves، collected three to four tonnes of waste on Saturday، the environment ministry said.

A report issued last year by the government’s Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency said 150 million tonnes of industrial waste end up in the Nile every year.

3 policemen sentenced to 3 years for beating man to death in Upper Egypt police station
An Egyptian criminal court has sentenced three police officers to three years in prison for beating to death a citizen inside a police station in Upper Egypt's Sohag governorate in 2016.
The court sentenced the head of the Tahta police station's investigations unit، the unit's deputy and the chief of the inspection unit of northern Sohag.

The court also sentenced a Sohag Health Department employee to one year in prison and relieved him of duty for two years for forging the medical report of the victim.

The verdict is subject to appeal.

The case dates back to 2016، when the defendants were referred to criminal court over charges of beating the victim to death in an attempt to coerce a confession in a murder case.

Egyptian citizens can now use Altibbi، the MENA region’s first and largest digital health platform، for free to reach out to certified medical professionals for healthcare assistance and education.

Altibbi announced on Thursday، February 7 the launch of its "One Million Free Medical Consultations” initiative، the largest free، remote medical advice campaign done via voice calls and text messages with the cooperation of the Egyptian ministries of health and communication.

The initiative came in partnership with Telecom Egypt and in co-operation with the Egyptian Foundation of Global University Graduates - T20، the Egyptian Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

Altibbi initiative aims to alleviate the burden of medical consultation costs for Egyptians. While the campaign will take place across the country، it will focus on residents of Upper Egypt، who face a critical lack of access to quality healthcare infrastructure.

Egypt to see gas boost from BP fields، Zohr as Cairo returns to export market
Egypt’s gas output will get a boost this year as the country’s huge Zohr field nears peak production and with $1.8 billion in investment from BP، officials said on Monday، as Egypt returns to export markets and positions itself as a regional hub.

Egypt hopes to leverage its strategic location and well-developed infrastructure to become a key international trading and distribution centre for gas، a potentially remarkable turnaround for a country that spent about $3 billion on annual liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports as recently as 2016.

It has made a series of big discoveries in recent years، including Zohr، the largest gas field in the Mediterranean، helping to draw back investors that had pulled away after a 2011 uprising led to mounting debt payments.

“What we have achieved in only three years has started to attract the attention of everybody — everybody in oil and gas industry، financial organizations... everyone is looking to Egypt with interest،” Petroleum Minister Tarek El Molla told an energy forum in Cairo.
