Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doesn’t believe in peace while accusing Israel of violating all agreements with the Palestinian Authority (PA)، i24 news reported.
Speaking to foreign minister at an Arab League meeting in Cairo، Abbas said Netanyahu “ used to say to me، “If you talk to Hamas، we will act against you because you will negotiate with a terrorist organization،” and now Israel is negotiating with Hamas and transferring money to them every month."
Abbas was referring to a ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel in November which allowed for Qatari funds to enter the Gaza Strip. However، the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel was later violated، and the two are now again in negotiations with Egypt as mediator.
"Israel has violated all agreements with the PA (including the Oslo accords)، while we (PA) upheld our part of the agreements،” Abbas told the foreign ministers in Cairo.
The reason Israel violated the agreements، Abbas said، is because of its support from the United States.
"Because the United States is behind Israel، Israel allows itself to dishonor any agreement، and if that is the case، how will we reach a solution? Will we reach a solution through American mediators or through Netanyahu's position that there is no solution to the Palestinian issue?" Abbas asked.
The PA President also lashed out at US President Donald Trump، saying his actions undermined his initial support for a two-state solution.
"Trump said he believed in a two-state solution based on the pre-1967 borders.. Two weeks later his decision to transfer the US embassy to Jerusalem، US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and later cut funding for United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA)،” Abbas said.
The long awaited US peace plan will be unveiled in June and is expected to deal with “all core issues” in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict، according to Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner who has worked on the plan with US special Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt.
The Palestinians have declared the peace plan “dead on arrival” a number of times، most recently by PA Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh.
"There are no partners in Palestine for Trump. There are no Arab partners for Trump and there are no European partners for Trump،" Shtayyeh told AP last week.
Lastly، Abbas commented on the efforts by Egypt to reconcile PA and Hamas، saying the Gaza ruler initially agreed to establish one Palestinian government under one authority but then tried to assassinate former PA Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah in Gaza.
Hamdallah escaped unharmed after an explosive device detonated as his motorcade entered the Gaza Strip in March last year.
After the incident، Abbas said he considered it a "cowardly targeting" of Hamdallah's convoy meant to scupper attempts to achieve Palestinian unity، and that Hamas was responsible.
"Whoever carried out this act directly serves the interest of the Israeli occupation، the main beneficiary from the division،" Abbas said.
Abbas also met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Saturday to discuss Trump’s “deal of the century”.
