The 37-year-old Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg، who’s currently serving as mayor of the town of South Bend in Indiana، is likely to be voted into the White House in 2020، and thus become the first ever openly gay president of the USA.
In an interview with Axios on HBO on Monday، he was asked that if he won the nomination، they’ll say he is too young، too liberal، too gay to be commander-in-chief. How would he respond?
He responded by explaining why he wanted to lead this country as People will elect the person who will make the best president،” he replied.
“We have had excellent presidents who have been young، we have had excellent presidents who have been liberal، I would imagine we have probably had excellent presidents who were gay، we just don’t know which ones. Statistically، it’s almost certain.”
Asked whether he had any idea which of America’s 45 presidents could have been gay، he answered: “My gaydar doesn’t even work that well in the present، let alone retroactively، but one can only assume that’s the case.”
The Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg stated that he wants to have a family with his husband، Chasten، and says that could happen if he makes it to the White House.
Buttigieg was little known nationally before he began his campaign for president earlier this year، but has seen his star rise in recent months، ranking alongside Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren in one Iowa poll last week.
He would be America’s youngest and first openly gay president if he were to take the White House in the November 2020 election. He would also be the first openly gay presidential nominee from a major political party.
Buttigieg told CNN’s State of the Union that “it wouldn’t be the first time that children have arrived to a first couple، but obviously that’s a conversation I had better have with Chasten before I go into it too much on television.”
Chasten Buttigieg has become a celebrity in his own right، and is often greeted with applause when he appears on the campaign trail.
Buttigieg said "statistically، it's almost certain" that there has been a gay president before. Of course، none have been openly gay، and almost every president، except for two، have been married to women.
An estimated 4.5 percent of the U.S. population is LGBTQ، a 2018 study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law found. So Buttigieg's assumption that at least one out of the nation's 45 presidents was gay is not so far-fetched — he just doesn't know which one.
