Bangladeshi Activists Rally in Universities to Call for Ceasefire in Gaza

On Monday, in Bangladesh, thousands of activists, supported by the ruling party’s student wing, took to the streets, marching through universities across the nation. Their unified call was for an immediate halt to Israel’s offensive in Gaza and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Enthusiastic members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League took to the grounds of Dhaka University, passionately chanting anti-Israel sentiments, proudly waving Bangladeshi and Palestinian flags, and displaying banners advocating for “Free Palestine, Stop Genocide.” The spirited rally drew the support of numerous other students who joined in, according to organizers.

Bangladesh, a predominantly Muslim country with a population of almost 170 million, does not have diplomatic ties with Israel and actively supports the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who leads the Awami League party, has strongly criticized Israel, accusing its government of committing genocide.

The student group said it organised the demonstrations in solidarity with protests in the United States and because of growing rage against the Israeli military action in Gaza. It called for action “against atrocities, massacres and ongoing human rights violations.”

Student leaders cited Israel over its brutal and indiscriminate attacks that killed women and children and destroyed hospitals. Meanwhile the children of Gaza aren’t getting enough food and water, said Tanbir Hasan Shaikat, an organiser.

“We have never seen attacks on hospitals in any war, but we have seen that in Gaza,” he said.

Other protesters said they joined the demonstrations to send a message to the world that they were against any oppression.
