Suspect in Sydney church attack charged with terrorism offense

Police have confirmed that a 16-year-old has been charged with “committing a terrorist act” after allegedly stabbing a Sydney bishop during a livestreamed sermon.

According to New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb, the suspect, who was hospitalized after the attack, is set to appear at a children’s court hearing by their bedside later today.

Police pressed the charges after a search of electronic devices at his home and an interview in his hospital bed.

He has been denied bail and could face life in prison if convicted.

Police did not say what ideology may have motivated the alleged assailant.
