Interior Minister: ISIS-K is the most significant security threat to Germany

According to Germany’s interior minister, the ISIS-Khorasan branch, which US intelligence suspects of being behind the recent mass shooting near Moscow, is considered the most significant Islamist extremist threat to security in Germany.

Nancy Faeser emphasized the ongoing high threat level in a recent statement, noting that it was elevated even before the attacks in Moscow and has since remained consistently high.

Four days after the horrifying attack by gunmen in camouflage who opened fire at concertgoers outside the Russian capital, leaving at least 139 dead and 180 injured, she addressed the tragic event. The attack has been claimed by the Islamic State.

Germany will introduce temporary border controls as part of ramped-up security around soccer’s 2024 European Championship that it will host this summer, she said. “Security is of course our top priority at this tournament.”

It starts on June 14 and is set to attract an estimated 2.7 million fans to stadiums and up to 12 million at public viewing events.

“We have ramped up our security measures in the police (forces), but also in the intelligence services,” Faeser said.
